Family Sponsorship to Canada: Everything You Need to Know
Reuniting Families: Canada's Commitment
Canada's Family Class immigration is one of the country's most important humanitarian programs, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close family members for permanent residence. In 2024, over 105,000 family class immigrants arrived in Canada — many from Africa.
Who Can You Sponsor?
As a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (PR) aged 18 or older, you can sponsor:
- Your spouse, common-law or conjugal partner
- Your dependent children (under 22, or over 22 if dependent due to physical or mental condition)
- Your parents and grandparents (subject to an annual intake cap — apply as soon as the application window opens)
- Other relatives — only if you have no other eligible relative and the person you're sponsoring has no closer eligible relative
Sponsoring a Spouse or Partner: The Most Common Path
Two Streams
- Inland (within Canada): If your spouse is already in Canada. They can get an open work permit while the sponsorship application is processed.
- Outland (outside Canada): Processed through the visa office in your partner's country. Generally faster processing (12 months target).
Key Requirements for the Sponsor
- Must be a Canadian citizen or PR
- Must not have filed for bankruptcy
- Must not be receiving social assistance (except disability)
- Must not have outstanding immigration applications as a sponsored person within the last 3 years
- Must sign an undertaking to support the sponsored person for 3 years (spousal/partner) or 20 years (parents/grandparents)
Financial Requirements for Parent/Grandparent Sponsorship
You must demonstrate income above the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) + 30% for the last 3 tax years. For example (2024 figures, 2-person household): minimum ~$41,000/year.
The Application Process
- Complete the sponsor's eligibility application online (MyCIC)
- Pay the processing fee ($85 sponsor + $540 principal applicant)
- Submit the sponsored person's PR application simultaneously (for spousal)
- Undergo biometrics and medical examination
- Police certificates from all countries of residence (6+ months since age 18)
- IRCC reviews and interviews (if required)
- Receive PR confirmation
Common Reasons for Refusal
- Insufficient proof of genuine relationship — submit thorough communication history, photos, visit records
- Sponsor's criminality (even minor offences may disqualify)
- Incomplete or inaccurate documentation
- Sponsored person's inadmissibility (health, criminality, prior misrepresentation)
Strengthening a Spousal Sponsorship for African Couples
Cross-continental relationships face heightened scrutiny. Build your evidence file thoroughly:
- WhatsApp/messaging history (screenshots showing daily communication over years)
- Video call logs
- Photos together across multiple locations and dates
- Letters, emails, cards
- Proof of financial support sent to partner
- Proof of visits (passport stamps, plane tickets, hotel receipts)
- Knowledge of each other's personal history, family, and daily life
